AWB is committed to operating in accordance with the concept of sustainable development. Our ongoing focus on environmental issues and community responsibilities are integral to the way we do business.
Our focus is on achieving best environmental practice in all aspects of our performance and aspiring to zero harm to environment. In order to achieve this, AWB aims to ensure that environmentally responsible behaviour is embraced within our organisation and in particular, we specifically undertake to:
- Ensure that environmental considerations are included in all aspects of our business planning and operations, consistent with sound business management practices and fulfilling our corporate social responsibilities;
- Meet, and where possible exceed the requirements of all relevant environmental legislation, regulations and licences and the principles of this policy and associated procedures;
- Develop, implement and maintain an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with internationally recognised standards;
- Identify, assess and manage environmental risk arising from our business activities;
- Set environmental objectives and targets that include strategies for pollution reduction and prevention. The aim is to meet, if not exceed these objectives and targets and our success in doing this will be monitored;
- Ensure that our employees, contractors and others we do business with understand this policy and its application;
- Educate our employees and contractors to create awareness of environmental issues, ensuring that this awareness translates into work practices being carried out in an environmentally responsible manner, and is integrated into training, decision making and performance assessment;
- Consult regularly and openly with Government, other industry members, our employees and the wider community regarding aspects of our operations that may have an environmental impact and on responsible ways to minimise this impact, not only within our organisation but at each level in the supply chain;
- Gain an understanding of the full life cycle impacts and safe use of our products and educate those we do business with on the responsible use of our products;
- Endeavour to minimise business impact on the environment through an informed and considered approach to plant and equipment selection and purchase, grain breeding, development and maintenance programmes and water management plans;
- Consider environmental impacts and aspects in the concept, design and development of ‘greenfields’ sites;
- Ensure sufficient resources are provided to meet the objectives of this policy.
All employees are encouraged to be pro-active in continually improving the organisation’s environmental management system, by identifying environmental issues arising from business operations and actively working with the organisation to provide suggestions regarding their management.
