Why does AWB have Premium Choice Varieties?
Premium Choice Varieties have been chosen for their ability to ‘shape’ the quality of the Australian crop. We’ve identified varieties with superior quality for a targeted range of products, and we’re paying a price premium to help increase the tonnage grown. By improving the overall quality of the Australian crop, Premium Choice Varieties will enable you and AWB to better take on the competition by delivering better products and returning higher prices.

How were Premium Choice Varieties chosen for Queensland?
The Premium Choice Varieties for your region have been selected to correct an emerging quality deficiency
Customer feedback and AWB testing have confirmed several long-term trends in the quality of APH received in Queensland. While bread baking performance has been increasing, the quality for yellow alkaline noodles has been slipping. If this trend continues, the market options and margins for APH will decline.
EGA Hume, Sunco and Lang have been chosen as Premium Choice Varieties to complement the current varietal mix. Increasing the proportion of EGA Hume, Sunco and Lang will re-establish the yellow alkaline noodle performance of APH. It will also maintain the high milling extraction and acceptable baking performance provided by varieties like Baxter, Kennedy, Sunvale and Strzelecki that currently comprise over 60% of receivals, because these varieties will remain in the mix.
Premium Choice Varieties comprised 21% of the hard wheat tonnage received in Qld last harvest, up from 12% in the previous year. This is great progress towards the 40% target that will improve the ‘shape’ of the crop and help to preserve its value against stiff foreign competition.
How were premiums set for these varieties in Queensland?
The premiums that support Premium Choice Varieties were set after detailed analysis and discussions with international customers and growers, agronomists and breeders from across Australia. They recognise the increased value that these varieties will add to the APH pool as well as the increased costs that may go with some of them, such as lower yield or increased production costs.

How were Premium Choice Varieties chosen for New South Wales?
The Premium Choice Varieties for your region have been selected to correct an emerging quality defect.
Customer feedback and AWB testing have confirmed several long-term trends in the quality of APH received in NSW. While bread baking performance from Northern NSW has been increasing, and is acceptable to customers, the quality for yellow alkaline noodles has been slipping. For Southern NSW, baking quality isn’t increasing at the required rate. If these trends continue, the market options and margins for APH will decline.
Sunco and Lang (Northern classification zone), Sunvale, Sunco and Lang (Central classification zone) and Sunvale (Southern classification zone) have been chosen as Premium Choice Varieties to complement the current varietal mix in each NSW wheat classification zone. Increasing the proportion of Sunco and Lang will improve the yellow alkaline noodle performance of APH whilst maintaining its existing milling and baking quality attributes. Increasing the proportion of Sunvale will improve baking performance by increasing dough strength whilst maintaining the milling and noodle quality provided by the current varietal mix.
Premium Choice Varieties comprised only 8% of the hard wheat tonnage received in Southern NSW last year, up from 5% the previous year. In Northern NSW Premium Choice Varieties have risen from 20% to 34% of hard wheat receivals. While NNSW is approaching the 40% target that will improve the ‘shape’ of the crop and help to preserve its value against stiff foreign competition, significant progress is still required in SNSW.

How were Premium Choice Varieties chosen for Victoria?
The Premium Choice Varieties for your region have been selected to correct an emerging quality defect.
Customer feedback and AWB testing have confirmed several long-term trends in the quality of AH received in Victoria. While the uptake of Yitpi so far has improved the quality coming from Victoria by improving noodle (especially colour stability) and baking performance and maintaining milling yield, improvements are still needed. We need to continue to improve noodle colour stability, dough strength and balance, baking performance and flour milling yield. If we don’t address these issues, the market options and margins for Victorian wheat will decline.
Yitpi has been chosen as a Premium Choice Variety because it has enhanced milling yield and noodle qualities (eating texture and colour), and acceptable baking performance. Lifting the proportion of Yitpi in Victoria’s receivals will increase the proportion of the crop that is AH, and increase the overall AH:APW ratio, providing a more balanced quality profile. At the same time, it will maintain the acceptable performance provided by varieties like Mitre and Goldmark, because these varieties will remain in the mix.
For Victoria, AWB and the breeding community do need to work together to develop more varieties with superior end use quality that perform agronomically for growers.

How were Premium Choice Varieties chosen for South Australia?
The Premium Choice Varieties for your region have been selected to correct an emerging quality defect.
Customer feedback and AWB testing have confirmed several long-term trends in the quality of AH received in South Australia. Continuing issues with milling yield, noodle colour stability, dough properties (strength, stability and balance) and baking performance have been improved by the uptake of Yitpi, but further improvements are required. If these are not made, the market options and margins for South Australian wheat will decline.
Yitpi has been chosen as a Premium Choice Variety because it has enhanced milling yield and noodle qualities (eating texture and colour), and acceptable baking performance. Lifting the proportion of Yitpi in South Australia’s receivals will increase the proportion of the crop that is AH, and increase the overall AH:APW ratio, providing a more balanced quality profile. At the same time, it will improve the less than acceptable performance provided by varieties like Krichauff and Frame that currently comprise 30% of hard wheat receivals.
For South Australia, AWB and the breeding community do need to work together to develop more varieties with superior end use quality that perform agronomically for growers.

How were Premium Choice Varieties chosen for Western Australia?
The Premium Choice Varieties for your region have been selected to correct an emerging quality defect.
Customer feedback and AWB testing have confirmed several long-term trends in the quality of ASWN and AH received in Western Australia. The quality of ASWN for white salted Udon noodles has been slipping in terms of colour, eating texture and colour stability. For AH, milling yield, dough strength and extensibility and noodle colour stability need to improve. If these factors aren’t addressed, the market options and margins for WA wheat will decline.
Calingiri comprises the vast majority of noodle variety receipts in WA. Increasing the percentage of Arrino and Cadoux will improve white salted Udon noodle colour and eating texture, making ASWN more acceptable and valuable in highly discerning Japanese and Korean markets.
Marginal and acceptable varieties such as Carnamah, Yitpi and Stiletto comprise around 50% of hard-grained wheat receipts in WA. Increasing the proportion of EGA Castle Rock and EGA Bonnie Rock will improve the quality and value of hard-grained wheat segregations by improving milling yield, flour colour and colour stability for a range of noodle types.
Premium Choice Varieties comprised over 25% of ASWN receipts in WA last year, up from around 10% the previous year. For AH, receipts of Premium Choice Varieties increased from 11% to almost 50%. In each grade, this has improved the ‘shape’ of the crop and helped to preserve its value against stiff foreign competition. Further increases will bolster this success.
