AWB’s 2009/10 estimated pool returns (EPRs) for wheat have risen $6-14 a tonne for all grades except higher quality durum, which has declined $5 a tonne.
Benchmark APW grade wheat has risen $6 to a new EPR of $261 a tonne in the Eastern Pool and by $8 to $258 a tonne in the Western Pool (FOB, excl GST).
AWB General Manager Commodities, Mitch Morison, said the world wheat market was beginning to look forward to the 2010 crop and is very conscious of risks to world production, although current burdensome stocks and limited demand are tempering the price rise.
“The market is responding to potential for reduced wheat area in Canada and the United States, with dry conditions also being felt in some parts of the Black Sea region,” Mr Morison said.
“It doesn’t change the fact that there is ample supply available at present, however the market is starting to look ahead to when these stocks are drawn down.
“Australian growers have seen little of recent wheat price rises due to the Australian dollar also appreciating at the same time, however with the Australian currency having softened slightly this week, a better picture appears for export returns,” Mr Morison said.
Durum prices have eased due to a combination of price competition from Canada and limited demand into Europe and Africa.
Estimated returns for AWB’s 2008/09 wheat pools remain unchanged, with APW wheat at $325 a tonne in the Western Pool and $330 a tonne in the Eastern Pool (FOB, excl GST).
