AWB has broken the grain drought at the Port of Portland, becoming the first company in over two years to export grain through the western Victorian port.
AWB General Manager Commodities, Mitch Morison, said the shipment of 26,250 tonnes of canola was being loaded at the GrainCorp terminal aboard M/V Velebit, bound for Pakistan.
“The much better season in Victoria last year has seen a resurgence in export availability, after the previous two drought seasons left much of Victoria’s export infrastructure with little grain to handle,” Mr Morison said.
“We’ve drawn canola from across the Wimmera and Western District of Victoria, with over half of that arriving by rail into Portland through our rail partner, El Zorro.
“We are shipping it to a group of eight customers in Pakistan, who are regular buyers from AWB.
“Our first shipment to them was earlier this year, from Western Australia, so it is great to be able to supply now from Victoria,” Mr Morison said.
The M/V Velebit is expected to complete loading at the end of the week, sailing by Saturday.
