AWB’s latest addition to its fleet of grain trains is about to enter service on the broad gauge network in the Victorian Mallee, with a train running to Ouyen to load wheat on 5 June, before returning to Melbourne.
AWB received 42 new grain wagons in May as part of an order for 90 units, with the rest arriving recently at the Port of Newcastle. The new wagons will mean AWB owns four complete grain trains, with one additional train on lease. AWB’s trains are hauled by specialist freight operator El Zorro Transport. Each of AWB’s wagons is rated to carry up to 68 tonnes of wheat and a train normally consists of 40 wagons.
AWB managing director Gordon Davis said first shipment of wagons had travelled down to Victoria for bogie exchange to broad gauge before going into service, while the recent arrivals would remain standard gauge.
“All the wagons we own are gauge-convertible, which was a deliberate purchase to ensure they can be switched as needed between the standard gauge network in New South Wales and Victoria, and the extensive broad gauge network in the Victorian Mallee,” Mr Davis said.
“Some of the Victorian network has recently been upgraded, so with this latest set of wagons our trains will be seen in many more places.
“The better season in Victoria last year has meant there is quite a haulage task to do.
“Our fleet of high-capacity trains can make full use of our fast and efficient GrainFlow sites, which means we can maximise supply chain efficiencies on the east coast to meet the demands of our export and domestic customers.
“There are many more rail-based sites operated by other companies in New South Wales and Victoria and AWB can offer rail freight services from these sites as customers wish. The fleet of new wagons means we are well placed as a competitive freight provider to offer best freight rates, wherever tonnage is available and rapid, efficient loading and turnaround can be achieved,” Mr Davis said.
