There has been strong interest from grain industry leaders and Australian durum growers for Australia’s first durum industry forum. Durum wheat growers and industry stakeholders from across Australia are coming together for a national durum forum being held in Adelaide during October.
Planning for the forum is well underway, with the main objective to improve the relationships between stakeholders in the industry, and develop methods of operating more effectively.
The organiser of the conference, Mr Pete Mailler – a Queensland grower with extensive experience in developing the industry – said that he has been involved in some very positive discussions with representatives from key industry groups in relation to the durum forum.
“Through talking to durum grower associations, millers, marketers and bulk handling companies I have gauged a very positive attitude and excitement towards the forum,” said Mr Mailler.
Guest speakers at the forum will include international durum experts, and growers will have the opportunity to discuss plans for the development of the industry and establish strategies that will help them to compete and intensify their presence in the international market.
AWB Limited, a major sponsor of the forum, is looking forward to working with other industry members to develop a significant export business. AWB’s Chief Executive, Andrew Lindberg, said the forum is a great way of guaranteeing the future growth of the durum industry.
“By working together with industry groups that are attending the forum we can build on the gains that already exist in the international market, and ensure that the Australian durum industry is operating in a commercial manner,” Mr Lindberg said.
According to Mr Mailler, Australia currently exports approximately 500,000 tonnes of durum each year and through industry cooperation this figure can be significantly increased.
“Australia is currently a major exporter of durum but there is always scope to increase Australia’s market share and increase the tonnages exported to international customers each year,” said Mr Mailler.
Durum growers and industry members will receive an invitation to the forum, which will include a full agenda and registration details, in the coming weeks. The forum is being held on 15th and 16th October at the Radisson Playford Hotel, Adelaide.
