AWB Limited today announced it would sell its Agrifood Technology laboratory in Toowoomba. The business conducts environmental testing including soil and water analysis, seed testing, and stockfeed feed ration analysis for livestock feeders in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
AWB Limited Chief Executive Andrew Lindberg said the business, which was purchased in 1999, had developed in a way that meant it was no longer consistent with AWB’s core activities of grain marketing and trading.
“The Toowoomba operation has functioned as a stand-alone business and as such offers little scope for full and meaningful integration to the operations of the AWB group,” Mr Lindberg said.
“We would expect that a suitable buyer would be able to capture the benefits of the Toowoomba laboratory as a niche business with the ability to provide fast, flexible service to clients in the area.”
Mr Lindberg said the sale would not affect AWB’s Agrifood Technology operation at Werribee in Victoria.
“The Werribee laboratory is an integral part of AWB Limited’s operations, especially in the important areas of product development and quality testing for our international customers,” he said.
The Toowoomba laboratory will be offered as a complete package initially, but could be broken up if several buyers were interested in the different business units.
“This is part of our strategy to maintain our commitment to our core business, which is the marketing and trading of grain and the provisions of services to grain producers in Australia,” Mr Lindberg said.
