AWB Limited’s Managing Director Andrew Lindberg today submitted AWB’s position to the Federal Government in relation to the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
"AWB certainly supports the FTA because of the potential benefits it will bring to the economies of rural and regional communities from increased trade in a wide range of agricultural commodities," said Mr Lindberg.
AWB is aware of the US farm group lobbying of the US government in an attempt to dismantle the Australian Single Desk for bulk wheat exports during FTA negotiations.
"Our submission states it is inappropriate for the governments to enter into any bilateral discussions relating to the multilateral wheat single desk, which is a global export marketing tool which has no impact whatsoever on bilateral trade between the US and Australia," said Mr Lindberg.
"There are no direct bilateral trade barriers between the two countries in relation to wheat, however, we have raised some transport impediments and government subsidy inequities which need to be considered in the negotiations.
"AWB is reassured by the strong commitments given by the Australian government that the Single Desk will be defended through the FTA negotiations, and therefore supports the development of the bilateral trade agreement," Mr Lindberg said.
