AWB is working to cultivate the new breed of farm leaders, initiating a unique conference designed to open the door to leadership for Australia’s young wheat growers.
AWB’s Chairman, Brendan Stewart, said the AWB Young Leaders Conference will be held in Melbourne from 23-25 August 2004, and would be open to wheat growers under the age of 35 from across Australia.
“As Australia’s leading agribusiness, AWB has a keen interest in the future of the grains industry and rural and regional Australia,” Mr Stewart said.
“We are committed to assisting young growers to take on greater responsibility in their business, industry and communities, and believe this initiative will play an important role in the development of the growers who attend.”
Mr Stewart said leadership had also been recognised as a critical issue in the grains industry strategic plan discussed at Grains Week in Perth this year.
With the theme “Sowing the seeds of Leadership”, AWB has developed an innovative and interactive program for the conference, which will expose participants to elements of leadership as well as assisting with their personal development.
“The Conference will include a detailed examination of the Australian grains industry, sessions assessing the role of government and the media in rural Australia, skills based workshops and interactive group tasks,” Mr Stewart said.
Mr Stewart encouraged all growers under the age of the 35 to apply to attend the AWB Young Leaders Conference.
“This is a unique opportunity for younger growers to get together and develop their skills and build their network of contacts, not to mention have a good time,” Mr Stewart said.
“Growers wishing to attend are not required to have had any leadership experience. The whole idea of this Conference is to help attendees take the first step in the development of their leadership skills.
“The grains industry and rural and regional Australia are crying out for young people to take up positions of responsibility, and we believe this Conference is a great place for potential leaders to start,” Mr Stewart said.
Young growers seeking more information or wishing to apply to attend the conference may contact the AWB Call Centre on 1800 054 433 or check details on this website. Applications for the conference should be made by Friday, July 23, 2004.
