Durum producers with the Bellaroi durum variety this season will have an opportunity to receive a $5/t flat premium above the Australian Premium Durum (APRD) pay grade return.
The premium is part of a marketing initiative developed by AWB in close consultation with the NSW Durum Growers Association, and follows a positive customer response to the milling and end quality attributes of the Bellaroi variety.
AWB Pool Manager David Johnson said the initiative would be trialed this year for up to 50,000 tonnes, and if successful, may be continued in future years.
“We have identified a market preference for the Bellaroi variety, and will establish a pure segregation of Bellaroi at a premium to normal Australian Premium Durum (APDR) values,” Mr Johnson said.
“This is a targeted marketing initiative for a segregated quantity of one particular variety, and the premium being offered is over and above any premiums obtainable through the Golden Rewards system,” Mr Johnson said.
The $5/t premium will be offered for up to 50,000 tonnes of the Bellaroi variety, and deliveries must be to DR1 binning line specifications with a minimum of 13% protein. The segregation will be closed when the target volume has been reached, and at that point, Bellaroi deliveries will revert to the APDR pay grade.
Mr Johnson said AWB had been working closely with the NSW Durum Growers Association in developing this initiative, and special segregations will be established at a number of receival points in the northern NSW region for the Bellaroi pay grade.
For more information, growers should contact their local AWB regional office.
