AWB International (AWBI) Chairman, Ian Donges, stated today that the offer by CBH to Western Australian growers is an opportunistic ploy to undermine the Single Desk and the benefits it delivers to all Australian wheat growers.
“The CBH offer aims to undermine the Single Desk by pulling volume out from the National Pool,” said Mr Donges.
“It aims to cherry-pick selected international markets, in a period of drought, to benefit a few wheat growers at the expense of all pool participants
“This offer will undermine critical deliveries to the domestic market and long term contracts with overseas customers that have been built up over many years by the National Pool,” said Mr Donges.
AWBI will review any bulk permit applications to ensure they are in the interests of all National Pool participants.
AWBI has adopted a responsible approach during the drought to ensure there are sufficient wheat stocks available for the following key customers:
- drought affected Australian growers;
- core domestic customers; and
- long standing international customers critical to WA growers like Japan and Korea who highly value Australian wheat.
“Over 80% of Australian wheat growers support the Single Desk and this offer undermines the Single Desk and financial returns to National Pool participants,” said Mr Donges.
