National Pools increase prices for major wheat grades  ( 04/12/2006)

AWB has further increased the major wheat grades for the 2005/06 and 2006/07 National Pool Estimated Pool Returns (EPRs) this week by $2 - $3.50 a tonne.  This makes the National Pool EPRs competitive with alternative offers.

Acting General Manager National Pool, David Johnson, said AWB had shipped 15.20 million tonnes of wheat between 1st December 2005 – 30th November 2006, with 8.10 million tonnes being exported out of Western Australia.

“AWB has already received over 750,000 tonnes of wheat in the 2006/07 National Pool as of last Friday, with over 500,000 tonnes from Western Australian growers,” Mr Johnson said.

“With 2006/07 National Pool deliveries fast approaching one million tonnes the industry needs to be mindful of the effects on current EPRs if there is any change to current bulk wheat export arrangements for the current pool.

“The 2006/07 estimated return to wheat growers for benchmark APW is approximately $260, this figure takes into account the APW base rate of $250/t plus the average returns achieved under Golden Rewards, a quality based payment system.

“If any changes are made to the bulk veto system for this harvest there is potential for wheat growers to lose valuable access to important long standing markets like Japan and Korea.

“Changing the bulk veto at this time could result in the National Pool receiving lower quality wheat, which it must accept under its obligation to be the receiver of last resort.  This could result in Australian wheat growers losing valuable international customers to our overseas competitors.”

The National Pool has made some positive changes to the protein scales for the 2005/06 hard wheats under it quality based payment system, Golden Rewards.

“As a result of continuing strong domestic sales for the 2005/06 prime hard and hard pools we have lifted EPRs by $2.50 - $3.50 a tonne.   AWB recognises the importance of continuing to add value to these pools until finalisation,” Mr Johnson said.

The next Pool Update will be Monday 11th December 2006.
