GrainFlow: Delivering a harvest focused on ZERO Harm

By Chris Liston

As harvest ramps up across the GrainFlow network we know that a safe and efficient service over harvest is key for our grower customers.  For the Cargill management team, we are committed to a harvest that results in ZERO Harm, protecting the safety and well being of our people, the integrity of our products and the health of our planet.

This year has certainly thrown us some curve balls with Covid-19 and the additional requirements that have come with it.  We have CovidSafe plans in place at all sites to ensure we are minimizing the risk in this area, which includes the use of our Grower Delivery App.  While the use of the grower delivery app may minimize our physical contact onsite to comply with COVIDSafe Plans, be assured it does not minimize our commitment to great customer service. In addition to these protocols, our focus remains strong on our operational safety requirements, in particular in our high risk activities.  There is huge amount of work that the operations teams do behind the scenes to keep sites safe. Some of these things include:

  • Providing clear and documented instructions to employees and contractors through toolbox talks and training;
  • Ensuring only licensed and trained staff are approved to operate equipment;
  • Creating exclusion zones around people and plant interaction;
  • Ensuring we have a strong focus on machine guarding;
  • Establishing traffic and pedestrian management plans for increased vehicle and people movements
  • Ensuring emergencies provisions (e.g. First Aid Kits; AEDs; Snake bite kits) up to date with designated first aid staff available.
  • Ensuring staff resourcing rosters are in place not only to staff the site but to manage staff fatigue.

Our “See, Say, Stop!” program is a simple and effective program that can be adopted by staff, contractors, customers or visitors to the site. We encourage anyone who may see something that doesn’t look or feel right to say something and stop the activity.  Zero Harm is at the heart of Cargill’s purpose to be the leading in nourishing the work in a safe, responsible and sustainable way and together we can achieve this purpose.

Have a safe and prosperous harvest.
