AWB International has upgraded the classification of three wheat varieties following the evaluation of quality data by the AWB International Variety Classification Panel at their most recent meeting.
In southern New South Wales, Peake and LongReach Dakota were both upgraded to Australian Hard (AH) from Australian Premium White (APW). Peake is commercialised by Crop Care Seed Technologies. Gladius which was developed by Australian Grain Technologies has an Australian Hard (AH) classification for Victoria and is commercialised by AGT Seeds.
Classification is the categorisation of a wheat variety into a commercial type or style of wheat that is recognisable for its end use capabilities. This system underpins the segregation of wheat and delivers the consistent processing performance expected by end-users and ultimately enables AWBI to maximise returns to growers.
This Panel consists of three AWB International representatives, three independent technical experts and one representative from the domestic milling industry and regularly analyses detailed quality data, for each new variety over a number of seasons. It then assesses the quality of new varieties against suitable control varieties as a reference, enabling it to determine the appropriate classification of the variety.
